River Rother - iden lock

Overview

The Rother runs deep (up to 13ft) and flows gently along this stretch. However, if there is a lot of water in the river, typically after a lot of rain, the main sluice gates are opened, and it will run much faster.

The swims near the road bridge have very steep banks but do have steps cut into them. Carry on along the track and through the gate next to the pump house, and the banks will ease until, eventually, they are just a few feet above the river.

This stretch of the Rother offers great fishing with all methods throughout the season.

Species - Trout, Roach, Rudd, Bleak, Dace, Chub, Bream, Tench, Carp, Perch, Pike, Eels

The coarse fish close season is enforced from 15 March until 15 June inclusive.

Directions

From Rye, head briefly North towards Peasmarsh and then turn right onto the military road. After 2.5 miles, you will cross over the river bridge at Iden Lock. The entrance to the river and swims is via the locked gate on the left immediately after the houses (see photo gallery below).
